roadhouse Madagascar – Cycle East

Detailed itinerary as .pdf

Madagascar, the fourth largest island in the world, lies in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Mozambique. Madagascar was formed by continental drift rather than volcanic eruption (it tore off the African mainland around 165 million years ago). A narrow coastal strip in the east is where most of the rainforest grows; the central plateau in the high altitudes is cool; and there are plains and low-lying plateaux to the west. Madagascar is a continent in miniature with its micro climates, vastly different habitats and a huge number of endemic species. The international conservation community has singled it out as one of the ecologically richest countries on the planet - the last Eden.
This bike ride takes us on an 8 days cycle, 590 kilometres in total, in the east of this amazing island. We cycle through highland villages and paddy fields, the lush tropical fruit plantations and coastal trails up as far as the tropical island of Ile Sainte Marie. The terrain is an exciting combination of tarmac and dusty red-earth off road trails. Far away from the modern comforts of daily life, this will be an unforgettable experience.

From / to Antananarivo, 12 days / 11 nights, June to November, (whale watching from July to September)

Klaus Heimer Photo Madagaskar 2012 with Klaus Heimer

There will be two Photo Madagascar tours with Klaus Heimer in 2012. Detailed itineraries will be available soon here. .

Minimum number of participants is four, minimum number is eight participants.

This tour is designed for private photographers.
If you are a professional and you want to ‘Photo Madagaskar’ please let us know and we will be happy to arrange a tour for you.
It has been called the eighth continent because of its unique wildlife that has evolved in isolation for 165 million years. Madagascar’s treasures include dozens of species of lemurs - a family of primates older than the monkey and a distant relative of humans - as well as several endemic birds and a colourful cast of chameleons. Three-quarters are found nowhere else in the world and are the product of millions of years of separate evolution since Madagascar broke away from Africa when the continents first formed.

Your tour manager is Klaus Heimer. Native German, he lives since 2000 in Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar. Here he established in 2002 his press agency ‘Pro Madagascar’. He works as freelance journalist, photographer and tour manager. Recently he got editor of ’Reise-Know-How‘, the only guide book for Madagascar in German language. .

Klaus Heimer says: ‘I think you get the chance for a few thousands good shots!’.

17 days wildlife adventure, starting in Antananarivo

Madagascar is an island in the Indian Ocean, some 100km’s from the Southern African east coast. Over millions of years, Madagascar developed a unique flora and fauna. This is the place where evolution has run wild and it has such a high degree of endemism, that it is truly a place like nowhere else on earth. Madagascar is famous for their remarkable selection of lemurs, primate’s endemic to the island, birds, brilliantly coloured chameleons and lizards, tenrecs, bats and rodents. Several early evening walks are also planned for this tour, in order to experience the ’darker‘ side of nocturnal life. While itinerary is scheduled there is some flexibility and you’ll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travellers of all ages who enjoy meeting new people as well as experiencing new cultures, doing some great photos. You will enjoy the exceptional and outstanding Malagasy wildlife on this trip.

In the animal kingdom there is a whole family of amphibians that is endemic. There are 223 species of amphibians of which 221 are endemic. Out of the 340 species of reptiles, 314 are endemic. 2/3 of the 100 species of true chameleons are to be found on the island. There are some 290 species of birds on the island and half of them are endemic. Perhaps it has the planet’s highest endemic ratio of birds. Five bird families are unique to Madagascar. 97% of its mammals are endemic. There are some 131 species of mammals of which 31 belong to the bat phylum and all of which, except 12, are endemic.
Aside from its chameleons, the lemurs are the best known of Madagascar’s animal wonders. Indeed only on this island can we find lemurs. Elsewhere in the world they were driven pout of competitive edge by the monkeys. Lemur is a word that means night spirit in Latin. These pro simians colonized the island some 60 millions years ago. One cannot say how many species of lemurs there are in Madagascar today because between 1997 and 2008 some 30 new species have been found in its forests. The list runs up to 75 species as of now, though some 15 species have gone extinct. Some of these extinct species may have been the size of a gorilla. Today some of the known species are in danger of extinction and others are vulnerable.
